{"id":26955,"date":"2021-01-22T17:46:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T22:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nywolf.org\/?p=26955"},"modified":"2021-01-24T10:39:21","modified_gmt":"2021-01-24T15:39:21","slug":"judge-orders-usfws-to-resume-releases-of-captive-red-wolves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nywolf.org\/2021\/01\/judge-orders-usfws-to-resume-releases-of-captive-red-wolves\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge Orders USFWS to Resume Releases of Captive Red Wolves"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>U.S. District Court Judge Terrence Boyle, of the Eastern District of North Carolina, ruled\u00a0in a case brought by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernenvironment.org\/news-and-press\/news-feed\/a-win-for-wild-red-wolves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southern Environmental Law Center<\/a>(SELC) that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must develop a plan by March 1 of this year to resume the successful practice of releasing captive red wolves into the Red Wolf Recovery Area in North Carolina. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernenvironment.org\/uploads\/words_docs\/PI_Order.1.22.21.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">court order<\/a>\u00a0temporarily prohibits the agency from implementing its recent policy change barring release of captive wolves into the wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SELC sued USFWS in November 2020 for violations of the Endangered Species Act connected with the agency\u2019s new policies that prohibit proven management strategies to recover the world\u2019s only remaining population of critically endangered red wolves. SELC brought the suit on behalf of the Red Wolf Coalition, Defenders of Wildlife, and Animal Welfare Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe agency has to stop managing for extinction and instead take meaningful action to rebuild the wild red wolf population in North Carolina.\u201d<\/p><cite>SELC Senior Attorney Sierra Weaver<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The wild red wolf population currently stands at only eight known (collared) individuals, a dramatic drop from the almost 150 counted in the late 2000s.
